Bogbean

Bogbean (Menyanthes trifoliata Menyanthaceae)

Other Names: Buckbean, Bitter Trefoil, Marsh Trefoil

Bogbean, also known as marsh trefoil, thrives in wet environments such as rivers, lakes, canals, and wetlands across Europe. This plant has short, soft creeping stems and thick, scaly underground rhizomes. Its leaves consist of three oval leaflets, and its pinkish-white, star-shaped flowers form funnel-shaped inflorescences. The fruit is a globular capsule containing bright yellow, oval seeds.

Parts for Use

Leaves

  1. Leaves are collected at the start of the flowering period in May and June.
  2. Leaves can be used fresh or dried.

Ingredients

Bogbean contains active compounds, including bitter phenolic acids, flavonoids, and tannins.

Use in Treatment

Bogbean is traditionally used to stimulate appetite and digestion, as its bitter taste promotes the secretion of digestive juices and saliva. A 1986 study confirmed the efficacy of its phenolic acids in supporting digestion. The plant also has laxative and diuretic effects. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it useful for treating rheumatic conditions. Research has explored bogbean’s effects on metabolism and its traditional use in regulating the menstrual cycle, though conclusive evidence for the latter is lacking.

Cultivation

Bogbean is typically found in wet, marshy environments and is rarely cultivated. It thrives in moist, acidic soil near water sources.
