Natural Remedies - Healing with Medicinal Herbs
Butcher's broom (Ruscus aculeatus Ruscaceae)
Other Names: Knee Holly, Box Holly, Sweet Broom
Butcher's broom is a low, woody, evergreen shrub. Its apparent leaves are actually cladodes (flattened stem extensions). In spring, tiny white flowers appear in the center of each cladode, developing into red, cherry-like fruits in autumn. Each cladode has a thorn at its tip, contributing to the plant’s common name.
Parts for Use
Underground Stem (Rhizome)
- Gray, bumpy, furrowed rhizomes are harvested in autumn.
- When dried, they are ground into powder or made into extracts.
- They are used in tablets, capsules, solutions, and creams.
Ingredients
The active ingredients in butcher's broom are steroidal saponins, which improve vein health, enhance blood circulation, and possess anti-inflammatory properties.
Use in Treatment
When taken orally, the steroidal saponins in butcher's broom constrict the surface of blood vessels, improving circulation. Clinical studies have demonstrated that butcher's broom enhances poor circulation in the lower limbs and reduces hemorrhoids, making it effective for treating stiff knees, leg pain, varicose veins, and hemorrhoids. It can be combined with other vein-supporting herbs, such as witch hazel. German clinical trials from 2002 showed that butcher's broom reduces lower leg swelling in women with chronic venous insufficiency caused by poor circulation. Italian studies confirmed its benefits for lower limb vein health. The herb also helps alleviate vein-related issues associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and oral contraceptive use. Additionally, the rhizome acts as a mild laxative, anticonvulsant, diuretic, and anti-inflammatory agent.
Cultivation
Butcher's broom is a hardy plant that grows well in both sun and shade, preferring slightly dry soil. It is propagated by seeds or root division in autumn.
