Natural Remedies - Healing with Medicinal Herbs
Centella (Centella asiatica Apiaceae)
Other Names: Indian Pennywort, Asiatic Pennywort
Centella is a tropical perennial primarily found in Madagascar, China, and Indonesia, thriving in moist environments such as lakesides, ponds, or rice fields. This low-growing herbaceous plant is recognizable by its clusters of wrinkled, fan-shaped leaves. In summer, it produces small white flowers beneath the leaves.
Parts for Use
Whole Plant, Leaves
- The whole plant or leaves are harvested year-round and used fresh or dried in infusions, decoctions, and powders.
- Plant extracts are used in tablets, capsules, and preparations for external use.
Ingredients
The active ingredients in centella include triterpene saponins, notably asiaticoside and brahmoside, which promote wound healing. The plant also contains flavonoids that strengthen veins and trace amounts of essential oil.
Use in Treatment
Orally, centella supports vein and lymphatic health, addressing issues such as capillary bleeding, varicose veins, and hemorrhoids. A 2001 report documented its effectiveness in treating chronic venous disease. Centella also strengthens the nervous and immune systems. Externally, it aids in treating skin conditions, particularly superficial wounds and minor burns. Research indicates that triterpenoids in centella stimulate connective tissue formation, enhancing wound healing. External use may also reduce stretch marks in pregnant women. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, centella is used to alleviate rheumatic pain and treat eczema.
Cultivation
Centella can be grown from seeds sown in spring, in moist soil in a sunny or partially shaded location. As it requires temperatures above 10°C, it is often cultivated indoors in colder climates.
