Evening primrose (Oenothera biennis Onagraceae)
Other Names: Common Evening-Primrose, Evening Star, Sundrop, Suncup
Although native to North America, this biennial plant is very common in Europe. It produces large, short-lived yellow flowers arranged in clustered inflorescences. Evening primrose blooms from June to September, with flowers opening in the evening. The fruit is a long, thick, stalkless pod, with each containing about 600 small seeds.
Parts for Use
Seeds
- Seeds are collected when ripe.
- Oil is extracted from the seeds and encapsulated for pharmaceutical use.
- The oil is sometimes used as a seasoning for food.
Ingredients
Approximately 25% of each seed consists of oil rich in essential fatty acids, particularly linolenic and gamma-linolenic acid. The seeds also contain protein, fiber, and minerals, including a high calcium content.
Use in Treatment
Evening primrose oil is highly effective for relieving premenstrual syndrome (PMS), particularly breast pain. This is due to its fatty acids, mainly gamma-linolenic acid, which play a key role in synthesizing prostaglandins (PGE). These substances regulate hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and prolactin, which are associated with the menstrual cycle. The fatty acids in evening primrose oil ensure an adequate supply of PGE, supporting proper hormonal function. PGE also helps maintain skin suppleness and elasticity by regulating sebum secretion, making the oil valuable in cosmetics for preventing skin aging. Studies show that prostaglandin E1 controls blood vessel dilation and has anti-inflammatory properties, making evening primrose oil effective for treating eczema, acne, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Cultivation
Evening primrose thrives in well-drained, dry soil in sunny locations. Under favorable conditions, it self-seeds and reproduces readily.
