Natural Remedies - Healing with Medicinal Herbs
Field horsetail (Equisetum arvense Equisetaceae)
Other Names: Small Horsetail, Common Horsetail, Ponytail
Field horsetail is found in wetlands and swamps across Europe and the United States. Its tall, sterile stems bear ring-shaped leaves, resembling a bottle brush. Historically, it was used for scrubbing pots or smoothing rough wooden surfaces.
Parts for Use
Infertile Stems
- Stems are harvested during the summer.
- Stems with brown spots are discarded due to potential parasite presence.
- Only green, dried stems are suitable for use.
- Field horsetail is primarily used as a powder, but can also be used fresh, as a liquid extract, or as a tincture.
Ingredients
Field horsetail is rich in minerals, particularly silica, which strengthens connective tissue and aids in arthritis treatment. It also contains flavonoids with antioxidant and diuretic properties, organic acids, and nicotine.
Use in Treatment
Field horsetail extracts have been traditionally used to treat genito-urinary tract infections, kidney and prostate problems, obesity, arthritis, bleeding stomach ulcers, and tuberculosis. Its silica content strengthens connective tissue, including tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bones, making it effective for rheumatism. It is also prescribed for cellulite and fat deposits on the thighs and buttocks, as well as for brittle bones, tetany, uncontrolled tremors, and muscle cramps. Field horsetail helps manage vaginal discharge and internal and external bleeding and has been shown to protect against hepatitis.
Cultivation
Field horsetail thrives in wet, swampy soil in sunny or slightly shady locations. It spreads aggressively, making it a challenging weed in gardens.
