Greater celandine

Greater celandine (Chelidonium majus Papaveraceae)

Other Names: Snake's Milk, Celandine, Swallowwort, Nipplewort

Greater celandine is commonly found along natural hedges, on uncultivated land, and in moist areas like ditches. It is recognizable by its small yellow flowers that bloom from April to July. The entire plant is covered with fine hairs, and breaking the stem or root releases a dark orange juice.

Parts for Use

Whole Plant Including Roots

  1. The plant is harvested and dried during flowering time.
  2. It is rarely used alone, often combined with herbs like dandelion and turmeric.
  3. Dry extracts are encapsulated, and fresh orange juice is used directly.

Ingredients

The active ingredients include alkaloids, notably protopine, which acts as an anticonvulsant, and chelidonine in the roots, which lowers blood pressure and also has anticonvulsant properties. The plant also contains organic acids and carotenoids.

Use in Treatment

In traditional Asian medicine, greater celandine has been used to calm the nervous system. Its orange juice is a well-known folk remedy for wart removal. Today, it is increasingly prescribed for liver problems. The antispasmodic properties help relieve cramps and upper digestive tract issues, and it is used for coughs and asthma. Greater celandine has antibacterial and antiviral properties, with 2002 Korean studies suggesting potential anti-cancer effects. German research from 1996 indicated possible benefits for nervous system diseases. Its mild analgesic and sedative effects make it useful for relieving rheumatic pain.

Cultivation

Greater celandine thrives in moist soil and tolerates both sun and shade. Due to its toxicity, it should not be grown in gardens accessible to children or used for home remedies without professional guidance.
