Hawkweed

Hawkweed (Hieracium pilosella (Pilosella officinarum) Asteraceae/Compositae)

Other Names: Mouse-Ear Hawkweed

This small herbaceous plant with creeping stems is commonly found in Europe, North Africa, and Asia. Its elongated, oval leaves, covered with white hairs, form a rosette at the plant's base. From May to September, Hawkweed blooms with dandelion-like yellow flowers at the tops of its stems.

Parts for Use

Whole Plant

  1. The plant is harvested immediately after flowering, tied in bundles, and dried in an open position.
  2. Used to prepare infusions, powders, and dry or liquid extracts, and found in various pharmaceutical products.

Ingredients

Hawkweed contains umbelliferone (a coumarin with antibiotic properties), flavonoids (which provide diuretic effects), and phenols (with antiseptic and anti-inflammatory actions).

Use in Treatment

A 1999 French study confirmed the diuretic effects of Hawkweed’s flavonoids, making it effective for reducing swelling caused by water retention, particularly in the legs and lower body. Its anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties make it useful for treating asthma, bronchitis, and inflammations of the kidneys and urinary tract. Hawkweed is also applied to wounds for its antiseptic qualities. Umbelliferone promotes bile flow, supporting digestive health, and has demonstrated antibiotic effects. A 1993 American study suggested that umbelliferone and other coumarin derivatives may help combat HIV and potentially other viral infections.

Cultivation

Hawkweed can be grown from seeds sown in spring. It thrives in well-drained soil in sunny or lightly shaded areas, making it suitable for less manicured garden spaces.
