Natural Remedies - Healing with Medicinal Herbs
Hops (Humulus lupulus Cannabaceae)
Hops, a climbing plant found up to 1,500 meters in wooded areas of Europe, features a sturdy, flexible stem with heart-shaped, deeply incised leaves. Male and female flowers grow on separate plants, with female flowers producing cone-like fruits used historically in both medicine and beer production.
Parts for Use
Female Flowers (Fruits)
- Female flowers are harvested in autumn when they turn yellowish-green.
- After drying, they develop a strong aroma and bitter taste, used primarily in beer production but also for infusions, powders, and medicinal extracts.
Ingredients
Hops contain essential oil with monoterpene and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and oxygen compounds, contributing to its aromatic flavor. Bitter compounds, humulone and lupulone, provide a bitter taste, and the plant also includes estrogenic compounds.
Use in Treatment
Clinical trials in Germany have confirmed that Hops, particularly its essential oil and oxygen compounds, possess calming properties that aid sleep. Hops combined with valerian are as effective as benzodiazepines for treating sleep disorders and are also used for nervous problems in children and adults. The bitter compounds humulone and lupulone enhance digestive function, exhibit antibacterial properties, and help relieve cramps. Current research is exploring Hops’ estrogenic compounds for potential treatments of menstrual and menopausal issues.
Cultivation
Hops can be propagated from cuttings taken in autumn and transplanted in spring into rich, well-drained soil in a sunny or slightly shaded location. Young plants can also be purchased for cultivation.
