Hypoxis

Hypoxis (Hypoxis rooperi (H. hemerocallidea) Hypoxidaceae)

Other Names: African Star Grass, African Potato

Hypoxis, a herbaceous perennial native to South Africa, features an underground stem and is often grown as an ornamental plant, similar to its relative, amaryllis. Its evergreen leaves surround stems that bear bright yellow, star-shaped flowers from June to November.

Parts for Use

Underground Stem

  1. Harvested during blooming, the underground stems are cleaned, dried outdoors, and ground into powder.
  2. Used in infusions and pharmaceutical preparations.

Ingredients

The underground stem contains sterols, sterolins, and hypoxoside, which has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Rooperol, a derivative of hypoxoside, is noted for its potential anti-cancer and antiviral effects.

Use in Treatment

In traditional African medicine, Hypoxis is used for urinary tract infections in South Africa and enlarged prostate in Malawi. In the Caribbean, it is prescribed for certain cancers. Animal studies indicate that rooperol may slow cancer cell growth. Hypoxis exhibits antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties, and recent research highlights its ability to boost immunity and reduce inflammation, with B-sitosterol and its glucoside aiding in managing rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.

Cultivation

Hypoxis grows wild in sparse, stony soil. Cultivation for home use is not recommended due to its medicinal potency and the need for professional guidance.

For All Uses

  3. Even commercial Hypoxis preparations available in health stores or online require consultation with a herbalist before use.
