Natural Remedies - Healing with Medicinal Herbs
Incense (Boswellia serrata Burseraceae)
Other Names: Frankincense, Indian Frankincense
Incense, a deciduous tree native to India, features ashy-gray bark that peels, long oval leaves, and flowers in inflorescences. Its precious resin, historically used in religious rites and cosmetics as noted in the Bible, is valued for its medicinal properties.
Parts for Use
Resin
- Collected year-round, used fresh or dried for powders and decoctions.
- Essential oil is extracted from the resin.
Ingredients
The resin contains boswellic acids (triterpenic acids) responsible for its healing properties, along with various sugars. The essential oil includes pinene, phellandrene, and sesquiterpene alcohols.
Use in Treatment
Incense is a traditional anti-inflammatory agent, with British research from 2000 confirming its efficacy. Its antiseptic and expectorant properties make it effective for respiratory infections, while it also aids in treating skin problems, vaginal infections, diarrhea, and intestinal infections. It supports circulation, helping with hemorrhoids, and its essential oil’s aroma may reduce anxiety. A 2002 German study validated boswellic acid’s effectiveness for arthritis, chronic catarrh of the colon, stomach ulcers, Crohn’s disease, bronchial asthma, and swelling around brain tumors. Swiss research suggests incense extract may target certain cancer cells.
Cultivation
Incense thrives in moist, well-drained soil in a very sunny location with a minimum temperature above 15°C.
