Littleleaf linden

Littleleaf linden (Tilia cordata, T. platyphyllos Tiliaceae)

Other Names: Sweet Woodruff, Wild Baby's Breath, Sweetscented Bedstraw

Littleleaf Linden, a deciduous tree growing 20–40 meters tall, has smooth gray bark that cracks with age. Its asymmetrical, heart-shaped leaves with serrated edges vary in size by species. Pale yellow, sweet-scented flowers in inflorescences with long greenish-yellow bracts bloom on long stalks.

Parts for Use

Flowers, Bracts, and Soft Wood

  1. Flowers are picked when three-quarters have bloomed and dried in thin layers, shaded from sunlight.
  2. Soft wood (inner bark and adjacent wood) is collected from wild trees in clean environments and dried in spacious air dryers.
  3. Flowers are used for infusions; soft wood for powders and extracts.

Ingredients

Flowers contain phenolic acids, proanthocyanidins, tannins, flavonoids, mucus, and a small amount of essential oil with calming effects. Soft wood contains phenolic compounds and phloroglucinol.

Use in Treatment

Littleleaf Linden flowers are used internally for minor sleep problems and nervous conditions, with a 2001 Portuguese study confirming their calming effects. Their antispasmodic properties, attributed to phenolic compounds and phloroglucinol, relax smooth muscles. The flowers’ diuretic effect helps manage high blood pressure, reduce blood fat, and ease migraines. Soft wood aids in cleansing the intestines, stimulates bile excretion, and treats gallstones, bloating, and other digestive issues. Externally, linden flowers relieve cracked skin, insect bites, and skin irritation.

Cultivation

Grows well in moist, well-drained soil in a sunny location. Propagate from seeds sown when ripe.
