Marjoram

Marjoram (Origanum majorana Lamiaceae)

Other Names: Sweet Marjoram, Knotted Marjoram, Tame Marjoram, Garden Marjoram

Marjoram, a woody perennial reaching about 60 centimeters, features small, velvety, oval leaves and compact inflorescences of white or pink flowers blooming throughout summer. Native to Portugal and widely cultivated in Hungary, Spain, and North Africa, it is both a medicinal herb and a popular culinary spice.

Parts for Use

Stems, Leaves, and Flowers

  1. Aboveground parts are harvested during the flowering period from July to September.
  2. Stems and leaves are dried and used for infusions, powders, and tinctures.
  3. Yellowish-green essential oil, with a penetrating camphor-like scent, is extracted from fresh flowers.

Ingredients

Marjoram contains bitter substances, tannins, flavonoids, manganese, and zinc. Its volatile oil is rich in carvacrol, thymol, sabinene, linalool, and terpenes, notably ursolic acid, which contributes to its calming effects.

Use in Treatment

Marjoram is effective for digestive disorders like intestinal cramps, nausea, bloating, loss of appetite, and diarrhea. Its sedative properties make it a valuable remedy for nervous-based digestive issues, insomnia, and heart palpitations. Korean research has confirmed the calming effects of ursolic acid, a terpene in marjoram. The herb stimulates breast milk production and sweating, with its diuretic properties aiding in toxin elimination. Externally, marjoram essential oil soothes joint and muscle pain, toothaches, and mouth ulcers.

Cultivation

Marjoram grows well from seeds sown in spring in a warm, sunny spot with well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil.
