Natural Remedies - Healing with Medicinal Herbs

Nettle

Nettle (Urtica dioica Urticaceae)

Other Names: Common Nettle, Stinging Nettle, Nettle Leaf, Stinger

Nettle, historically used for durable fabrics, including German army uniforms during World War I, grows along canals, ditches, and uncultivated land. Its stinging leaves are rich in nutrients, making it a versatile medicinal plant.

Parts for Use

Leaves and Roots

  1. Harvested in May and June before flowering, when leaves are rich in histamine and serotonin.
  2. Fresh or dried leaves are used for infusions.
  3. Roots, used fresh or dried and powdered, are pressed for juice or used in extracts.

Ingredients

Nettle leaves contain iron, vitamin C (aids iron absorption), calcium, potassium, silicic acid, phenols, and flavonoids. Roots are rich in polysaccharides, lecithin, sterols, and phenolic compounds.

Use in Treatment

Nettle has been used traditionally to relieve rheumatic pain by applying fresh leaves to affected areas, though modern methods are gentler. As a diuretic, it enhances sodium and urine excretion, aiding rheumatism and arthritis. German studies from 1999 confirmed its anti-inflammatory properties. Nettle extract boosts appetite, supplies iron, and combats fatigue. Research from 2000 and 2002 suggests root extracts may slow prostate tissue growth and lower blood pressure. Externally, nettle treats acne, eczema, oily skin, and dandruff.

Cultivation

Nettle is grown from seeds sown in spring in moist, loamy soil in a sunny or slightly shady location.
