Poppy

Poppy (Papaver rhoeas Papaveraceae)

Other Names: Common Poppy, Turkish Poppy, Wild Poppy, Red Poppy, Corn Poppy, Field Poppy

Papaver rhoeas, an annual plant, features vibrant blood-red, paper-like flowers atop slender, hairy stems, often found wild along field edges. Its deeply incised leaves form a basal rosette, and the fruit is an oval capsule containing numerous tiny black seeds.

Parts for Use

Petals

  1. Flowers are harvested in May and June; petals are separated and dried for use in preparations, powders, or capsules.
  2. Commonly included in syrups and blended with herbs like littleleaf linden, lavender, and passionflower for synergistic effects.

Ingredients

Poppy petals contain mucus, anthocyanins, and small amounts of alkaloids, primarily rhoeadine, which has milder effects than opium poppy alkaloids. Poppy seeds are used in food but not in medicinal preparations due to potential toxic alkaloids.

Use in Treatment

The mucus in poppy petals soothes throat linings, making it effective for dry cough and hoarseness, especially when combined with marshmallow. Its antispasmodic and sedative properties help treat mild insomnia in children and adults, nervous tension, and digestion issues. A 2001 French study confirmed its sedative effects, noting anthocyanins but no significant alkaloids. Traditionally, it has been used to regulate abnormal heartbeats in otherwise healthy hearts.

Cultivation

Poppy thrives in well-drained soil in a sunny location and is grown from seed.
