Purple loosestrife

Purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria Lythraceae)

Other Names: Spiked Loosestrife, Purple Lythrum

Purple loosestrife, a striking perennial, thrives in moist, marshy soils, reaching up to 1.5 meters. Its fragrance-free purple-pink flowers bloom atop stems, making it a popular ornamental plant. It resembles willowherb (Epilobium) and is often mistaken for it.

Parts for Use

Aboveground Parts

  1. Flower stalks are harvested in full bloom, hung upside down to dry in an airy space.
  2. Dried stems are crushed or ground into powder for decoctions or liquid extracts.

Ingredients

Rich in polyphenols, including flavonoids that enhance circulation, anthocyanins that support blood vessel health, and tannins with astringent properties that combat infections and diarrhea.

Use in Treatment

Purple loosestrife is a traditional remedy for diarrhea, particularly in children, due to its tannin content, with proven efficacy against viral diarrhea. Its antiviral properties, noted in 2000 Finnish studies, also combat Candida albicans, which causes oral mucosa inflammation. A 1986 study showed it lowers blood sugar, aiding diabetes management. Polyphenols make it effective for circulatory issues, especially hemorrhoids, and it is used for excessive menstruation, intermenstrual bleeding, vaginal discharge, and irritation. Externally, it treats injuries, ulcers, inflamed eyes, and eczema.
