Saw palmetto

Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens Palmae)

Other Names: Sabal, American Dwarf Palm

Saw palmetto, a low-growing palm native to South America, has been used by Native Americans and early settlers for genital and urinary issues. Known as the "catheter plant" for its benefits on bladder and prostate health, it produces oval, fleshy, purple-black berries.

Parts for Use

Fruits

  1. Berries are harvested in autumn when ripe.
  2. Used to prepare tinctures and pharmaceutical products.

Ingredients

Saw palmetto contains volatile oils, steroidal saponins, tannins, flavonoids, fatty acids, and polysaccharides. It acts as a tonic, supporting tissue repair and overall body strength.

Use in Treatment

Saw palmetto is widely used for benign prostate enlargement (BPH), reducing symptoms like frequent urination, nighttime urination, and weak urine flow. A 1996 French study confirmed its effectiveness in reducing BPH by inhibiting testosterone conversion to dihydrotestosterone, which contributes to prostate cell proliferation. Clinical trials over the past two decades show it improves urinary function with fewer sexual side effects compared to conventional drugs. It also stimulates appetite, enhances digestion, and supports recovery. Traditionally, saw palmetto’s hormonal effects have been used to promote breast enlargement and increase breast milk production in women, as well as to address impotence.

Cultivation

Grow saw palmetto in warm climates, as it does not tolerate temperatures below 10°C. Cultivate indoors or in a heated greenhouse in well-drained soil.
