Vervain

Vervain (Verbena officinalis Verbenaceae)

Other Names: Common Vervain, Common Verbena, Wild Verbena, Blue Vervain, Wild Hyssop, Mosquito Plant

Vervain, a herbaceous perennial found along rural roads and pastures in Europe and parts of Asia, grows 30–70 cm tall. Revered by ancient Greeks and Celts for its supposed magical properties, it has upright, branched stems with oppositely placed, incised oval leaves. Pale purple flowers bloom in slender inflorescences from July to August.

Parts for Use

Flowers and Leaves

  1. Harvested in July during blooming and dried immediately to preserve active compounds.
  2. Used primarily for infusions, tinctures, and other herbal preparations.

Ingredients

Contains iridoid glycosides, particularly verbenalin and aucubin, known for their anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties.

Use in Treatment

Vervain has been used for centuries to treat infections. Recent Indian research highlights its extracts’ ability to alleviate, heal, and relax. Internally, it relieves muscle and menstrual cramps, colds, flu, nervous tension, fatigue, and indigestion, while acting as a diuretic. Externally, it soothes diaper rash, sunburn, and cracked skin. Vervain may also strengthen the immune system and stimulate hormone secretion, particularly related to breast milk production.

Cultivation

Grow from seeds in spring or fall, in moist, well-drained soil in a sunny location.
