Wild pansy

Wild pansy (Viola tricolor Violaceae)

Other Names: Colorful Violet, Blue Sparkle, Heartsease, Heart's Delight

Wild pansy, a herbaceous annual, grows up to 40 cm along natural fences and uncultivated land during summer. It has branched stems with lanceolate, deeply serrated leaves. Delicate flowers, typically purple, yellow, white, or a combination, bloom atop long stems.

Parts for Use

Flowers, Leaves, and Stems

  1. Harvested from June to August in the morning before flowers open.
  2. Dried carefully in shade to preserve properties, used for infusions, powders, tinctures, extracts, capsules, and syrups.

Ingredients

Contains salicylic acid and its derivatives, mucus, anthocyanosides, tannins, flavonoids, and peptides, contributing to its anti-inflammatory and therapeutic effects.

Use in Treatment

Wild pansy’s salicylic acid makes it effective as a poultice for skin conditions like acne, eczema, pimples, and dandruff. It also treats inflammation caused by rheumatism. Internally, its mucus aids expectoration in respiratory infections, while anthocyanins and flavonoids support blood vessel health, improving circulation and aiding in atherosclerosis and heart disease. As a laxative and diuretic, it helps detoxify the body and treat urinary tract infections. Recent studies highlight its peptides’ infection-fighting properties and tannins’ role in boosting disease resistance.

Cultivation

Grow from seeds in spring in well-drained soil, in sunny or slightly shaded areas. In mild climates, it can be a short-lived perennial.
