GENITAL WARTS (CONDYLOMA) - DESCRIPTION

The virus known as human papilloma virus (HPV) is the cause of condyloma, a type of infection of the skin and genital mucosa. The virus causes two types of disease, condyloma acuminatum, which causes wart-like growths on the external genitalia, and the less noticeable condyloma latum, which causes shallower warts that attack the vulva and anus. This second disease especially occurs on the cervix and is associated with cervical cancer. There are more than a hundred types of human papilloma virus, but only a few highly contagious types cause condyloma.

In 95% of cases, condyloma is transmitted sexually, and in the other five percent it can be caused by poor hygiene. Warts take at least three months to appear, but can go unnoticed for several years after contact with an infected person.

Although there are often no visible signs of the disease, sometimes there is irritation or itching around the vulva, pain during intercourse which can cause burning and bleeding, and in some types of virus abnormal growths on the mucous membrane of the vulva or part of the body between the vulva and anus.
