HYPOTHYROIDISM - DESCRIPTION

Hypothyroidism is a metabolic disorder caused by a decrease in the amount of thyroid hormone in the body, which manifests itself with a number of symptoms. The most common cause of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland. It is an autoimmune disease in which, due to a recognition error, the body makes antibodies to various components of the thyroid gland. These antibodies gradually lead to irreversible damage to the thyroid gland and a slow weakening of its function. Hypothyroidism can be congenital or acquired, and affects women six times more often than men.

Hypothyroidism can be inherited due to natural stuntedness (atrophy) of the thyroid gland or it can be a goiter caused by an inflammatory reaction of the thyroid gland associated with certain medications, too much iodine or too little hormone production. Treatment of overactive thyroid with radiation, especially radioactive iodine, and some autoimmune diseases may also favor the development of hypothyroidism.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism are fatigue, drowsiness, low blood pressure, weight gain, hoarseness, goiter, increased sensitivity to cold, slow pulse, muscle aches, depression, anemia, constipation often occurs, skin becomes pale, and in severe cases edema occurs, cardiac dysfunction, sterility, impotence, constipation, dry and disheveled hair, and irregular or excessive menstruation.
