PARKINSON'S DISEASE - DESCRIPTION

Parkinson's disease is a progressive degenerative condition, generally characterized by trembling, slowness of movement, stiffness, and abnormalities in posture. In its most serious form, it is associated with deep physical and mental disorders. Parkinson's disease is the result of degeneration or damage to certain nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine, a substance that serves as a transmitter of messages in the brain.

This neurological disorder affects an average of one in 200 people and occurs as a result of nervous system exhaustion. Parkinson's disease damages the parts of the brain that control voluntary movements causing progressive loss of motor functions, tremors and muscle stiffness. It rarely develops before the age of sixty, is more common in men than in women, and there are indications that it may be hereditary. For unknown reasons, Parkinson's disease is less common in smokers than in non-smokers.
