RAYNAUD'S SYNDROME - DESCRIPTION

Raynaud's disease or Raynaud's syndrome is a circulatory disease that affects the fingers and toes. When exposed to cold, the blood vessels that bring blood to the fingers and toes tighten abruptly and cut off the blood supply. As a result, the fingers turn white in a few minutes and then flood due to lack of oxygen (cyanosis) with very severe pain.

Raynaud's syndrome can be caused by the effects of a cold followed by a sudden warming or certain forms of strong emotions, such as anxiety. This disease can be a sign of atherosclerosis in the limbs, blood clotting disorders or hormonal imbalances often associated with the thyroid gland. Sometimes the disease is caused by certain medications and treatments such as beta blockers, adrenaline or chemotherapy.

The disease affects people in their twenties and forties, especially smokers, and is five times more common in women than in men. Also, it has been observed that in a higher percentage of attacks are persons operating vibrating devices or machines. Raynaud’s disease does not worsen with age, affects minimal skin areas, and there is no skin deterioration and gangrene.
