TINNITUS - DESCRIPTION

Tinnitus is a perception of sound in the ear or head that occurs without obvious external sound stimuli. It most commonly manifests as buzzing, humming, ringing, or cracking in the ear. It can be constant, intermittent, pulsating, treble or bass. In about twenty percent of the general population, tinnitus of various types and durations occasionally occurs, and in about five percent of the general population there is a constant noise that subjectively interferes with an individual's daily life. In the elderly population, hearing impairment and tinnitus are even more common.

Even a healthy ear can sometimes hear noise, for example after exposing the ear to loud noise, such as a rock concert or detonation near the ear. It is individual how much noise bothers an individual. In some people, louder noise may not cause major subjective disturbances, while in others, lower-intensity noise may make it impossible to concentrate, interfere with sleep, or cause increased sensitivity to sound. People who have tinnitus associate the mentioned symptom with ear disease and feel the noise even more strongly, creating a vicious circle of cause and effect from which the patient does not know how to get out.

Tinnitus is most often caused by hearing damage, ie damage to the sensory hearing cells in the inner ear or damage to the auditory nerve. Damage to the sensory auditory cells alters the electrical signals in the auditory nerve, and the brain notices this change as noise. Tinnitus is not a disease but a symptom, so there is no single therapy in its treatment.
